# Risk assessment & management
.The Education and Care Services National Law (167)
ensure that every reasonable precaution is taken to protect children ... from harm and from any hazard likely to cause injury
1. Identify
.identify the hazard/potential hazard
.regular daily checklists, make it a regular topic at team meetings
.hazard = anything that could cause harm/-ve impact
e.g. broken/dangerous equipment, poor practice
2. Assess
.how likely is it to happen?
.how often might it happen?
.how serious is the outcome?
.use risk matrix
- a way to assess the hazard & potential risk)
- use it to work out the importance and priority prior to managing the risk
3. Manage
.eliminating/minimising the impact using control measures
Source: ACECQA |
4. Evaluate
.evaluate the current risk/potential harm
how well is it eliminated/managed?
is this the best possible outcome?
5. Review
.ongoing monitoring of the risk/potential harm
Example A: broken toy
.identify: the children are playing with the broken toy (observe)
.assess: broken toy = risk to the children
.manage: take the toy away (eliminate the risk)
.evaluate: hazard is removed
.review: repair/replace the toy
Example B: nappy changing procedure
.identify: potential risk of lifting young children to the change mat throughout the day
.assess: high risk
.manage: cannot be eliminated
→ undertake manual handling training
→ install a step ladder to reduce the lifting
.evaluate: reduce the risk of injury to educators
.review: ensure the control measures are applied consistently
