    # Skin Protection

    .put protective barrier between sun's rays and skin

    .not only use one

    .be aware of UV radiation reflect from surrounding environment

    1. Slip on protective clothing

            .cover as much skin as possible

            .material: close weave, cotton, polyester, linen, lycra

            .dark colour will block more UV radiation than light colour

            .UV Protection Factor (UPF): 40-50


    2. Slop on SPF 30 or ↑ sunscreen

            .no sunscreen provides 100% UV protection

            .with 'broad spectrum' - filter both UVA and UVB radiation

            .is water resistant

            .is 'AUST L' or 'AS/NZS 2604:98' - meet Aus standard

            .not expired (shelf life of sunscreen is ~2 yrs)

            .apply 20 mins before to clean, dry skin

            .1 teaspoon of sunscreen to each arm, leg, front of body, back of body, face (include ears and neck) = at least 7 teaspoons

            .re-apply every 2 hrs or more frequently if needed

            .lips - zine / lip balm will be enough


    3. Slap on a hat

            .common sites of skin damage & cancer: face, ears, top of head, back of neck

            .broad brimmed hats

            .bucket or 'surfie-style hats'

            .legionnaire hat

            .not recommended: caps, visors


    4. Seek shade

            .stay in full shade with a dark shadow

            .e.g. shade sail, tree, pergola, undercover area, umbrella

            .also don't forget to avoid reflected UV radiation

            shade audit - assess the quality and need for shade


    5. Slide on some sunglasses

            .is 'AS/NZS 1067:2003' - Aus standard

            .frames fit close to face

            .eye protection factor (EPF) = 1 - 10, 10 the best

            .short-term exposure: mild irritations (excessive blinking, swelling, difficulty looking at strong lights), acute photo keratopathy (sunburn of cornea, aka snow blindness)

            .long-term exposure: pterygiums (overgrowth of conjunctiva onto the cornea), cataracts (cloudiness of lens), skin cancer of eyelids and around the eyes

    # Limit Sun Exposure

    .limit sun exposure during the time of day when UV radiation levels are 3 or ↑ 


    # Sun Protection Myths

    1. Tanning 

    Myth: A tan provides protection from the sun

    FALSE!

        .tan = sign of skin damage


    2. Solariums 日光浴

    Myth: Going to a solarium is a safe way to tan

    FALSE!

        .solariums are not a safe alternative to the sun

        no safe way to tan


    3. Windburn

    Myth: Reddening of the skin on a cool, cloudy day is windburn, not sunburn

    FALSE

        .no such thing as 'windburn'

        .actually sunburn

        .possible to get sunburnt on a cool day, in shaded areas, when the sky is cloudy


    4. Sunscreen

    Myth: Sunscreen is toxic and may actually increase skin cancer rates

    FALSE

        .no evidence of long term harmful effects with using sunscreen

        .problem arise if people rely on sunscreen to prolong the time under the sun


    5. Skin cancer and Age

    Myth: Only elderly people get skin cancer and it is easy to treat

    FALSE

        .skin cancer can develop at any age

        .melanomas can grow anywhere of the body

        .treatment can be extensive and painful
