大堡礁海洋公園管理局（The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority）與澳大利亞海洋科學研究所（Australian Institute of Marine Science）聯合完成了對大堡礁 750 個珊瑚礁的航空測量。

他們發現白化（bleaching）與珊瑚礁曾經經歷的熱應力（heat stress，Heat stress occurs when our body is unable to cool itself enough to maintain a healthy temperature/Heat stress is an environmental factor that regularly challenges the well-being of living organisms.）明顯地是一致。

在大堡礁的最北端，珊瑚礁管理局（Reef Authority）表示，白化程度從輕微（minor）到嚴重不等。而在北部和中部地區，他們說白化最為嚴重，甚至發現了一些珊瑚礁已經死亡。
