    NQS 2.2.2

Having a clear plan for the management and communication of incidents and emergencies assists educators to handle these calmly and effectively, reducing the risk of further harm or damage

.asthma → affect airways (the tubes carry air in and out of the lungs)

→ make it hard for affected person to breathe

    .reasons why airways become narrow

            > inflammation (swell up) of inside lining of airways

excess sticky mucus fluid block the airways

            > bronchoconstriction (tightening of muscles) around airway

    .triggers

            >  genetic factors

            > obesity, unhealthy diet

            > smoking, expose to cigaratte smoke

            > air pollution, chemicals, smells

            > expose to allergens

    # Symptoms of Asthma

            > wheezing when breathing out

            > persistent irritable cough (esp at night)

            > coughing / wheezing (when exercising)

.severe asthma attack (need to call ambulance)

            > wheeze that is often quiet

            > sucking in of the throat and rib muscles

            > pale, sweaty

            > possible blue lips

            > very distressed, anxious

            > severe speaking difficulties

            > SOB (shortness of breath), difficulty in breathing

            > tightness & heaviness in chest

    # Medications for Asthma

    .medication: bronchodilators, corticosteroids

    .puffers

→ relievers (end an acute attack):

only used as needed to relax lung muscle and airway walls

            → preventers (prevent attack):

take regularly prevent inflammation, swelling, mucus production

.spacer: clear plastic tube → allow more time to breath the medication into lungs

    .blue reliever puffer

            1. sit upright

            2. exhale completely, then put puffer into mouth

            3. give one puff, hold the breath for 4s, and then take 4 breaths

            4. repeat step 2 + step 3 three more times

            5. inhale slowly & steadily

            6. wait 4 mins, no improvement → give another 4 puffs

            7. still no improvement → call ambulance, give another 4 puffs
